Tom Clancy Complicated

Updated: Sep 17, 2020

Tom Clancy, arguably the most famous resident of Maryland, was also reputably the most meticulous and detailed writer on the market. More often than not his writing was a sophisticated chronicle of military hardware and thorough look at raw power---usually ending with grand explosions. It's a style that not everyone appreciates. If you don't want to know that all full-sized and compact Glocks have a trigger pull measuring approximately twenty-four newtons, or 5.39 pounds, versus twenty-eight newtons of force, or 6.29 pounds of force for smaller, concealed carry Glock handguns---then you won't enjoy reading his books.

The same is true of a lesser known Marylander, Mike Burnette. If you enjoy discovering the ontology and unifying principle of an emerging consciousness or learning that Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz holds that all existential propositions, except the existence of God, are contingent truths, then you'll enjoy his apologetics-based fiction PSYCHONIX: Mind Over Matter.

What Mike Burnette brings out in his writing is a human, relatable voice with plausible, compelling plots and characters with more than one dimension; dialogue that rings true, and ideas that, however passionate, transcend space and time. His novel isn't an easy read like Harry Potter or the Hunger Games, but it's worth it. PSYCHONIX: Mind Over Matter is a scientific and supernatural exploration of consciousness and all that the human mind experiences and hopes for in this world—and the next. It merits your time and the few words you might have to look up along the way.
