Imagination is a gift that some people have in abundance, and certain individuals have the ability to share their creativity in ways that make our lives richer. Mike Burnette has this gift, and his new book, The Only Spaceship Closet in the Universe, is evidence of his ability to draw readers into an entertaining and multi-layered fantasy. Anyone with a childlike heart will be absolutely enchanted as the charmingly described scene is set for the beginning of the book. Like C S Lewis, another author that is loved by millions all over the world, the author has written a tale that may seem to be for children, but there are secret treasures for adults hidden throughout the development of the story, even a visit by Lewis himself! Those who are familiar with his work will be delighted to recognize references to many of his ideas, and will see allegorical development representing worldviews based on origin, destiny, meaning and purpose. Even some of Francis Schaeffer’s ideas of the upper and lower story are there if you know how to interpret them. Christian readers should be inspired to connect the dots and parents and grandparents can use this as a launching pad for further talks with their little ones, who will be simply enthralled with the story itself. There is so much interesting content for the reader to discover. This little book is enjoyable on any level, and the idea of traveling around the universe in a little boy’s closet that has magically become a spaceship really is my idea of a great adventure!
