Incentives Matter

Incentives Matter! Incentives matter in business, and the medical community is a business. There are some successful cases within the military, where degrees of socialism appear to work, but in my nearly 40 years associated with the Department of Defense, I have rarely met a good doctor or nurse who intended to stay, because the burden on the system was too high and the pay and incentives where too low.

The only way the military has been able to hold on to high caliber doctors and nurses is to pay for their schooling and offer big government bonuses. But it's a tight cap paid for by tax dollars, and they're continually under the contraint and direction of military authorities.

Again, it's not all bad. It's just not as innovative and productive as the free market.
